Custom Decorated Cookies From a Yorktown Home Baker

You’ve probably stood in the bakery aisle the week of a party, looking at the same sheet cakes and plastic tubs of cookies everyone else buys, and wished you had something with more thought behind it. Maybe it’s a birthday, a baby shower, or a thank-you for a client who sent you work all year. You want whatever you bring to show that you thought about the person on the other end.

Lauren Moore bakes and hand-decorates custom sugar cookies from her kitchen in Yorktown. You choose the colors, the theme, and the message, and she designs every cookie in the order around the person or the event. Her cookies show up at birthday parties, showers, weddings, holiday gatherings, and corporate events, and she teaches decorating classes in Yorktown once a month.

Birthday Parties, Showers, and Weddings

Many of Lauren’s customers are women, often moms planning a birthday party or a baby shower. A custom cookie can carry the party’s colors, its theme, and the birthday kid’s name, so your dessert table looks like you planned it down to the last detail instead of grabbing whatever was left on the grocery store shelf.

Lauren has made cookies for weddings, too, and she’ll take on just about any kind of celebration, including family reunions. Custom cookies usually run three and a half to four inches across, which gives each one enough room for a detailed design. Every cookie comes individually bagged and heat-sealed, so they double as party favors your guests can carry home.

If you own a business, the holidays bring the yearly question of what to send the clients who kept you busy. Gift cards and fruit baskets get the job done, but they don’t say much about who sent them.

Lauren has an edible ink printer, so she can print an image directly onto a cookie. Your logo, your brand colors, or a message to your client can go right on the cookie itself.

Real estate agents can use the same printer to put the house on a closing gift for their buyers. A cookie with your logo also works for a grand opening, an open house, or a thank-you to the referral partners who keep sending you business.

Personalized Holiday Cookies

Fall through the end of the year is Lauren’s busiest season, and she runs holiday pre-sales so you can get your order in before her calendar fills. Her Halloween pre-sale features a large cookie personalized for the person you’re giving it to.

Between events, markets, classes, and custom orders, Lauren is busy, especially during the holidays. If you have a holiday party or a round of client gifts in mind, ordering early is the safest way to get a spot.

Cookies as a Thank-You or Just Because

You don’t need an event to send someone a dozen cookies. A custom box can thank a teacher, welcome a new neighbor, celebrate a coworker’s promotion, or cheer up a friend who’s had a hard week.

Lauren sees giving cookies as an act of kindness toward the person who receives them, and that idea is half of the reason behind her business name.

Lauren teaches cookie decorating classes about once a month at Lilac Lane DIY Studio in Yorktown. Each class takes up to about 15 people and runs about an hour. You get four cookies and four icing colors, and she walks you step by step through decorating each one. She supplies everything, so you only need to bring yourself, and you take your finished cookies home.

People book her classes for date nights, girls’ nights, and birthday parties. Kids are welcome, and Lauren recommends they be at least eight or nine years old. If you’d like a private class for your own group, she’s open to it with a minimum of about eight people.

You can also decorate at home with one of her DIY kits, which come with plain cookies, icing bags, and sprinkles. A kit makes an easy family night or a ready-made activity for a kids’ party.

Lauren says most people don’t realize how much goes into a custom cookie. Her mom, Susan, makes the dough. Lauren decorates every cookie by hand, and the icing needs time to dry before anything can be packaged. When someone asks for cookies by tomorrow, she has to say no, because the icing wouldn’t even be dry yet.

Your final price depends on the design, the level of detail, the number of colors, and how many flavors you choose. Flavors include sugar, lemon, and chocolate chip. Each cookie is sealed in its own clear bag and stays fresh for up to two weeks at room temperature. Lauren takes a limited number of custom orders each week, and every customer gets a personalized quote before booking.

The Story Behind Kindness Through Cookies

Lauren is a Yorktown native and a physical therapist who has worked in Williamsburg for 12 years. During COVID, while everyone was stuck at home, she started decorating cookies as a hobby because she loved watching baking shows. She taught herself through YouTube videos and gave the extras to family and friends.

She started with custom orders, added events and farmers markets a couple of years later, and then began teaching classes. Today she calls Kindness Through Cookies her second full-time job. Her husband, Brett, serves as the company’s salesman and taste tester.

Learning to decorate cookies brought Lauren joy during a season of personal struggles, and the name of the business came out of that time. Kindness Through Cookies means two things to her. Giving cookies is a way to be kind to someone else, and the name is a reminder to be kind to yourself, which she says people tend to forget.

How to Order Custom Cookies

The easiest way to order is the custom order form on Lauren’s website. Tell her what you’re picturing, and she’ll email you back with the details and a price quote. Plan on at least two weeks’ notice, since shorter timelines may carry a rush fee and holiday dates book up fast. The minimum order is one dozen.

Pickup is in Yorktown, and delivery may be available, depending on your location and date. Lauren doesn’t ship cookies.

Lauren makes cookies only, so she’s not the person to call for a cake. If someone at your event has a nut allergy or celiac disease, she’ll steer you elsewhere rather than take a chance. Her upcoming markets, events, and classes are all listed on her website.

Custom Cookies for Yorktown and Williamsburg

From her kitchen in Yorktown, Lauren makes cookies for birthdays, showers, weddings, client gifts, and holidays for families and businesses across Yorktown, Williamsburg, and the surrounding area. Whether you’re planning a big party or sending a dozen to one person who deserves a good day, she’ll design the order around them.

When you want to do something special for someone, give them something they’ve never gotten before.
